The UEFA Nations League is a European national team competition that takes place every two years. It was played for the first time in 2018 and replaces the friendly matches in the international match calendar established by FIFA.

The first information about its creation appeared in 2013, when the president of the Norwegian Football Federation stated that a third tournament was being considered for the European national teams. In 2014, Gianni Infantino stated that one of the great benefits of the proposal was helping smaller federations find matches. Finally, on March 27 of the same year, its foundation was approved unanimously.

The initial format established that the 55 participants were divided into four leagues: 12 teams in A and B, 15 in C, and 16 in D. The teams move up and down the ranks according to their results. This distribution was modified for the 2020-21 edition, going to be located 16 teams in leagues A, B and C and only seven in D. This allowed some important teams that had descended in the first tournament, like Germany or Croatia, stay in the highest category.

The winners of each of the four groups in League A qualify for the Final Four of the UEFA Nations League, in which the champion is decided. The four matches are played in one of the four countries that make up the semifinals. The choice of the venue is made by UEFA.

Furthermore, the competition has an influence on qualifying for the Eurocup, giving teams a second way to access it. Play-offs are held for each of the leagues. Each group winner gets a place in the semifinals. If the champion is one of the 20 qualified teams, the place is awarded to another from that league. If there are less than four teams that have not obtained the classification, the places go to correspond to other of the lower leagues. This defines the last four participants of the Eurocup.

Portugal was the champion of the UEFA Nations League in its first edition. The Portuguese team advanced to the Final Four after winning the group with Italy and Poland. It was the one selected among the four to host the final phase. The venues for the matches were the Estádio do Dragão de Oporto and the Estádio D. Afonso Henriques de Guimarães. In the semifinals they defeated Switzerland 3-1. In the grand final they beat the Netherlands 1-0 with a goal from Guedes.
