The Eredivisie is the first category of professional football in the Netherlands. It was founded in 1956 due to the growth of the sport in the country and the intention to professionalize it. Ajax managed to be the champions of the inaugural season in a tournament without play-offs for the title.

It is made up of 18 participants. Each one faces the rest of the rivals twice, once playing in their stadium and the other as a visitor. At the end of 34 days, the order of the classification defines the future of the clubs. The overall goal difference is the first tiebreaker criterion in the event that there is equality of score between two teams. The first two enter the Champions League. The third and the winner of the playoff for access to European competitions that dispute the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh, qualify for the Europa Conference League. As for the descent, the last two descend directly to the Eerste Divisie. The penultimate participates in a playoff for permanence in the division.

The Eredivisie can be seen live on television, both nationally and internationally. In 2021, ESPN and NOS are the networks broadcasting the competition in the Netherlands. Outside the borders of the nation, it is televised in several foreign countries such as Belgium, Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia or Vietnam.

More than 25 clubs know what it is like to be crowned tournament champions, but only four have done so more than a dozen times: Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord and HVV Den Haag. The Amsterdam team has been the dominator in the last decade, chaining the titles of 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 consecutively. He also managed to proclaim himself the winner in 2019.

The Eredivisie 2020 was never completed due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. On March 12, the country's government banned all events. On April 2, Ajax, PSV and AZ together with other clubs expressed their refusal to the possible resumption of the tournament. On April 24, the KNVB definitively announced the suspension of the season and made the following decisions: the title was void, there were no promotions or demotions, and the classification for European competitions was defined according to the positions in the table of the March 8, date of the last completed day.
